The Cat Imaging Telescope for Very-high-energy Gamma-ray Astronomy
نویسنده
چکیده
The CAT (Cherenkov Array at Th emis) imaging telescope, equipped with a very-high-deenition camera (546 fast phototubes with 0:12 spacing surrounded by 54 larger tubes in two guard rings) started operation in Autumn 1996 on the site of the former solar plant Th emis (France). Using the atmospheric Cherenkov technique, it detects and identiies very high energy-rays in the range 250 GeV to a few tens of TeV. The instrument, which has detected three sources (Crab nebula, Markarian 421 and Markarian 501), is described in detail.

OBSERVATION OF THE CRAB NEBULA GAMMA-RAY EMISSION ABOVE 220 GeV BY THE CAT CHERENKOV IMAGING TELESCOPE
The CAT imaging telescope, recently built on the site of the former solar plant “Thémis” (French Pyrénées), observed γ-rays from the Crab nebula from October 1996 to March 1997. This steady source, often considered as the standard candle of very-high-energy γ-ray astronomy, is used as a test-beam to probe the performances of the new telescope, particularly its energy threshold (220GeV at 20 zen...
متن کاملThe MAGIC Cherenkov Telescope for gamma ray astronomy
The Major Atmospheric Gamma ray Imaging Cherenkov Telescope (MAGIC) is in commissioning phase and will start to become fully operative by the end of 2003. Located at El Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain), it has the largest reflector area (17 m diameter) of all the existing Cherenkov telescopes. New technologies have been used to reduce the energy threshold for gamma-ray...
متن کاملObservation of Extragalactic Sources of Very High Energy Γ-rays with the Magic Telescope
MAGIC is currently the largest single dish ground–based imaging air Cherenkov telescope in operation. During its first cycle of observations more than 20 extragalactic objects have been observed, and very high energy γ-ray signals have been detected in several of them. The results of this observations are presented, together with a discussion of the spectral characteristics and the flux variabi...
متن کاملDesign Study of CANGAROO-III, Stereoscopic Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes for sub-TeV Gamma-ray Detection
CANGAROO-III is an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) array of four 10 m telescopes for very high energy (sub-TeV) gamma-ray astronomy. A design study of Preprint submitted to Elsevier Preprint 1 August 2001 the CANGAROO-III telescope system was carried out using the Monte Carlo technique in order to optimize the pixel size and the telescope spacing. Studies were also made of observ...
متن کاملStatistical Issues in High-Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy for GLAST
This paper describes the statistical issues involved in analyzing data from high-energy gamma-ray telescopes, at levels from event reconstruction to correlations of populations of astrophysical sources. Some motivation for attempting to do astronomy with high-energy gamma rays is also given, along with some of the constraints implied by operating the instrument in orbit. Specific attention is g...
